Something to remember:
I was reading Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. I mentioned this to my friend Lauren, who said, “If you like that, you should really read A Thousand Splendid Suns.” Which I did, and loved.
At an after-work gathering, my colleagues and I were talking about books. I told them I was reading Handmaid and Suns.
"I guess I’ve been on a disenfranchised-women literary kick lately," I said.
Instead of staring at me with the look some people get when they’ve realized they’re speaking with a feminist, my colleagues said, “You should really read The Red Tent. You’ll love it.” And my boss went inside to get her personal copy to lend me.
(I did love it, by the way.)
